Supporting equine welfare
The Equine Welfare Stewarding Alliance is a growing group of volunteers from across the equestrian industry who care greatly about protecting equestrian sport in the long term.
We have some 50 plus volunteers; the group consists of vets, saddle fitters, dentists, osteopaths, chiropractors, judges, stewards, breeders, coaches, trainers, show organisers and general equine enthusiasts.
In 2024 we attended 14 major events, and the requests for us to attend shows/events is increasing each year.

Our mission is to improve the lives of equines by advocating for responsible and improved welfare standards and stewarding, and empowering individuals and organisations with knowledge, resources, and support.
Our vision is that all equines, UK-wide, regardless of whether in competitive or leisure settings, are treated with care and compassion, ensuring their health and well-being are prioritised through informed, sustainable, and ethical practices.
Our core values are:

Integrity: Upholding transparency, ethical behaviour, and accountability.
Collaboration: Building partnerships with stakeholders and individual horse riders, owners and trainers to create lasting impact; encouraging all to engage in addressing welfare concerns in a supportive and non-judgemental environment.
Training
We are extremely grateful to the British Horse Society (BHS) who have assisted us with online training that amongst other subjects, covers motivational interviewing which is probably the most helpful as this provides guidance on how to approach those tricky conversations. The training will be ongoing, as we are keen to prepare and support them as much as possible for the role.
Currently, we are planning further coaching with one of the UK’s leading mental health experts re motivational interviewing, as well as compiling a training programme to ensure a consistent approach with one of the foremost equine scientists.
